RESUMO

A randomly oriented nanowire network, also called nanonet (NN), is a nano-microstructure that is easily integrated into devices while retaining the advantages of using nanowires. This combination presents a highly developed surface, which is promising for sensing applications while drastically reducing integration costs compared to single nanowire integration. It now remains to demonstrate its effective sensing in real conditions, its selectivity and its real advantages. With this work, we studied the feasibility of gaseous acetone detection in breath by considering the effect of external parameters, such as humidity and temperature, on the device's sensitivity. Here the devices were made of ZnO NNs covered by SnO2 and integrated on top of microhotplates for the fine and quick control of sensing temperature with low energy consumption. The prime result is that, after a maturation period of about 15 h, the devices are sensitive to acetone concentration as low as 2 ppm of acetone at 370 °C in an alternating dry and wet (50% of relative humidity) atmosphere, even after 90 h of experiments. While still away from breath humidity conditions, which is around 90% RH, the sensor response observed at 50% RH to 2 ppm of acetone shows promising results, especially since a temperature scan allows for ethanol's distinguishment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown potential benefits for obesity treatment; however, current devices lack physiological feedback, which limit their efficacy. Changes in extracellular pH (pHe) have shown to be correlated with neural activity, but have traditionally been measured with glass microelectrodes, which limit their in vivo applicability. APPROACH: Iridium oxide has previously been shown to be sensitive to fluctuations in pH and is biocompatible. Iridium oxide microelectrodes were inserted into the subdiaphragmatic vagus nerve of anaesthetised rats. Introduction of the gut hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) or distension of the stomach was used to elicit vagal nerve activity. MAIN RESULTS: Iridium oxide microelectrodes have sufficient pH sensitivity to readily detect changes in pHe associated with both CCK and gastric distension. Furthermore, a custom-made Matlab script was able to use these changes in pHe to automatically trigger an implanted VNS device. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to show pHe changes in peripheral nerves in vivo. In addition, the demonstration that iridium oxide microelectrodes are sufficiently pH sensitive as to measure changes in pHe associated with physiological stimuli means they have the potential to be integrated into closed-loop neurostimulating devices.

RESUMO

This paper describes the development of an array of individually addressable pH sensitive microneedles using injection moulding and their integration within a portable device for real-time wireless recording of pH distributions in biological samples. The fabricated microneedles are subjected to gold patterning followed by electrodeposition of iridium oxide to sensitize them to 0.07 units of pH change. Miniaturised electronics suitable for the sensors readout, analog-to-digital conversion and wireless transmission of the potentiometric data are embodied within the device, enabling it to measure real-time pH of soft biological samples such as muscles. In this paper, real-time recording of the cardiac pH distribution, during ischemia followed by reperfusion cycles in cardiac muscles of male Wistar rats has been demonstrated by using the microneedle array.

RESUMO

This work describes the preparation of an array of individually addressable pH sensitive microneedles which are sensitized by electrodepositing iridium oxide. The impact of the deposition potential, storage conditions and interferents on the sensor characteristics such as slope, offset, intra- and inter-batch reproducibility is investigated. The device may be a useful tool for carrying out direct pH measurements of soft and heterogeneous samples such as tissues and organs. For example, we demonstrated that the microneedle array can be employed for real-time mapping of the cardiac pH distribution during cycles of global ischemia and reperfusion.

RESUMO

Liquid-junction-free reference electrodes have been prepared on screen printed substrates using poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) as solid-contact and novel ionogels as capping membrane. The chemico-physical properties of the PEDOT layer were tuned by changing the electropolymerization media and the electrodeposition technique. Electrodepositing PEDOT films potentiostatically or potentiodynamically were found to have a significant impact on the stability of the electrodes during the conditioning step. Optimization of the capping membrane formulation, e.g., acrylate monomers, ionic liquid, cross-linkers and photo-initiators, produced electrodes with properties almost equivalent with a commercial reference electrode. Thus, calibration plots of Na(+) ion-selective electrodes against the optimized solid-contact ionogel reference electrodes (SCI-REs) or against a double-liquid junction Ag/AgCl electrode did not present any significant difference. Such SCI-REs may provide an effective route to the generation of future low-cost components for potentiometric sensing strips.

RESUMO

The construction and characterization of platinum and gold disk electrodes with minimum radii of 7 nm (platinum) and 500 nm (gold) is reported. The electrodes were prepared with a micropipet puller using a two step procedure and have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, high speed chronoamperometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The formation and growth of platinum and gold oxide layers, on the electrodes at time scales from microseconds to seconds, is reported. Significantly, the apparent microscopic area as determined by forming and subsequently reducing an oxide layer in acidic electrolyte using cyclic voltammetry depends dramatically on the scan rate. While conventional roughness factors between 1.8 and 3 are observed on average for scan rates above 5 V s(-1), the apparent roughness can exceed 30 for scan rates less than 0.5 V s(-1). Chronoamperometry, conducted on the microsecond to millisecond time scale, is used to probe the dynamics of monolayer and multilayer oxide formation as well as the reversibility of the oxide formation and removal. The latter study suggests that (at least for platinum) the growth of the oxide layer proceeds with a lower constant rate after an oxide monolayer is formed.
